Had an interesting(?) issue come up this past week. A homeowner called and asked if I would give an opinion on installing a set of stairs. After I got there it turned into an inspection of a prefinished floor. It looked ok from the start but as I looked at it more closely I saw that a spline wasn't used when the flooring changed directions, there were humps in the floor every for 4' or so (I'm guessing from OSB seams that were not sanded), no vapor barrier was used, nosings were installed wrong, not enough fasteners were used...the list goes on and on. Since I wasnt there to inspect the floor I didn't say much other than he should call the flooring store and discuss the issues. He showed me the invoice and the store had charged $4 more than I charge to installed the floor and way over priced the flooring...I felt so bad for the family. They got screwed on the price, the installation is going to fail and the store won't talk to them at all. Oh the installer claims he's the "the best in the area"...it's enough to want me to stop trying.
