Hi gentlemen,
So I think I've gotten most of the floor squeaking taken care of. I've learned quite a lot. I have 3/8" Red or white Oak floors top nailed. I had to top nail into the floor to stop the squeaking. I learned that the installers nailed at a certain interval, and that that certain interval wasn't always at the same spots the floor joists were. So once I found the floor joist, I shot finishing nails through the hardwood, and subfloor into the joists.
One trick I learned after shooting all these nails is to take a sharpie marker to the nail heads when I load them into the gun. This way, they will blend with the floor instead of standing out as shinny silver tops.
I purchased 120 grit screens and screened my floor. I vacuumed it really nicely first, but I forgot to wash it. What do you recommend for washing the floor if I don't know if it's ever had wax on it or not? I read somewhere that Mineral spirits should not be used with water based poly? Is this correct?
Is it too late now that I screened already to wash the floor? Should I re-screen afterwards?
I puchased Bona PolyFloor HD from the Home Depot. It is only a one part WaterBased Poly, not the traffic stuff you pros use. Any opinions?
It says to roughen the surface with 220grit between coats. If I use the floor scrubber, would I buy a screen, or use a polishing pad? What color pad would be 220? I have Red currently.
And if I'm using a roller, should I use a 1/4" nap?
Thanks!!!!
