Topic "Help!! Im Worried!" a message from whitneywarner

Hello my boyfriend and I are finishing our new cherry hardwood floors ourselves and I am very worried. We are using a product from Sutherland Welles called the Murdoch's Uralkyd 500 Floor Finish. We sanded the floors well ( I believe ) and applied the first coat of finish which is the Murdoch's Hard Sealer (a polyermized tung oil sealer) we then noticed some very terrible scratches from someone moving furniture across the floor and also from moving the refrigerator. These were long arching scratches that I didn't want there so we used our hand sander and sanded them out and then applied the second coat of finish on the entire floor. My concern is that these areas that we sanded are quite a bit lighter and while I know they may only technically have one coat of finish while the rest of the floor has two I am concerned that due to the nature of cherry and how it darkens overtime that these areas that we sanded will always be visible. Does that make sense? I am also concerned because their seems to be some blotchiness to the floors, will this even out over time as the wood darkens or will the finish, which is the Uralkyd, essentially seal the floor as is forever?! Its too late for us to turn back now I feel so I would appreciate only comments intended to help the situation rather than suggesting I should have used a different product! Thank you for all of your help!

Hello all. new to site and first post.

I know all stories have 2 sides but I will try to keep this as simple as I can. In my view this is another tape issue.

So home owner contracts me to add new solid site finished floors and refinish existing. Job goes on we get to point of staining and in the middle of staining a rain storm comes thru. We were not expecting it and all our gear is out in rain. We rush out get our stuff out of rain and go back into house...walking with wet shoes on prepped floor ( yes i know, super bad ). we go back re touch up those ares and finish staining. When stain is complete of course we have blotches. We went back resanded areas with blotches and got the floors back to where they should be. Home owner is happy in the end and makes final payment. i made sure all her concerns and any issues she had were taken care of before we got final payment. Floor was complete and finished with final payment on sept 10th. First week of Nov I get a call from home owner to come out and look at floor and there is an issue. So I go out and the poly is peeling. The home owner had painter come in after us to repaint the house. Now you can see where the tape has peeled the poly off the floor from where the painters put tape down. So about a 16 inch strip along all the walls has peeled up spots.

Home owner tells me the poly is bad and this is my fault and we need to fix it. I explained that I thought it was on the painter for using incorrect tape and explained the poly wasnt the issue. Any way we go back and forth for a bit. She doesnt want to deal with things during the holidays and calls me back in jan. Well we get into it again. Her saying its my fault and me saying I dont think so. Any way after a heated discussion just to be done I offer to screen and recoat the entire floor ( I thought it would be easier on me than taping each spot off and doing by hand ) I let her know I will get back with her when I check my schedule so we can schedule a time. I call back 2-3 days later with no answer. Finally a week later she calls back and says that it is now a stain issue. She has had other " floor guys" come in and this is what they have told her. She now wants me redo the entire floor or to pay her back the money to have the floor be resanded and stained and polyed. I told her I do not beleive the stain is an issue and explained I think the poly is the only issue and that I was willing to screen and recoat but that would be the extent i would go.

Well I have now been served a demand letter from her attorney. Obviously I am looking for my own legal help in case this does turn in to a law suit. Curious if anyone here has advise or recommendations for me. I feel like I have gone above and beyond with this home owner.

My flooring contractor has install a 2-1/4" solid wood floor over 3/4" T& G OSB. the floor trusses run side to side in the house. The sub floor is install front too back. The floor boards are install so they are perpendicular to the trusses which means the flooring is running the same direction as the long side of the sub floor. I have gaps in the flooring every 4' front to back. I am assuming these gaps are directly over the subfloor joints. Again, I am assuming as the sub floor shrunk form drying out over the past 5 months it created the condition I now have. Is this correct? should the flooring have been installed perpendicular to the long edge of the subfloor rather then to the floor trusses? How can this best be corrected? the gaps are less then 1/8".

Eric

We don't move pianos or pool tables! Why? Ask a piano company or slate pool table company why! Also ask them how much they charge to do so! A lot more than you can image. Inevitably piano won't sound the same or the pool balls just don't roll the same since you touched it. We did a $30,000 dollar install. Client moved Baby Grand across it. Has those lovely small brass wheels left a nice indentation only noticeable in the glare. My advice get a professional to do their work.

Due to water damage I need to replace about 25 sq ft of engineered wood flooring in a house I just moved into. The product comes in 7 7/8 inch wide sections and within each section are 3 strips of about 2 3/4 width each, thickness is about 1/2 inch. I don't know where it was bought as the previous owner is deceased, but a flooring installer thinks it's a discontinued Armstrong product. I found a Bruce product (http://www.bruce.com/hardwood/C5010.asp) that is a color match minus the knots but is not the right width. Any advice on where I might look for remnants? Or go about having some made to match? Thanks... Paul

Tell me about the floating subfloor application....Is this concept consider "floating" because it is not nailed to concrete or because the finisihed floor is not nailed down?

Who should I connecy with to understand more?

I'm wondering if anyone out there is using the steel wool and vinegar trick to stain floors or using it to get a dark ebony look. I've never used it but am very interested in it. I'm currently working on some test samples at my shop but would like to hear what other floor professionals think about this subject. Thanks

The best of both worlds?

Why not put a coat of Waterlox on, let it dry properly, and apply two coats of Traffic?

Good afternoon. We are just starting out and I was looking for some sample contracts that I could read through and pick through to create my own contract. I've searched google and I mostly come up with garbage. Is anyone willing to share their flooring contracts or maybe point me in the correct direction?? I'm in Oregon if that helps or matters. I know that lien laws need to be incorporated etc.

Thanks for any and all assistance. I appreciate it!!!!

I purchased click/lock engineered flooring and had an expansion joint question. Upon reading the manufacturer's installation instructions, they recommend an expansion joint for any area run 30 ft or larger. I am running hardwood from room to room and I would have two 30ft plus sections measuring from a room to room via the doorway space only. My question is: Do I need to put an expansion joint at the doorways and cover with T-molding in order break up a 30ft plus run? I included a picture for one example. Unfortunately, regardless of the direction I run the floor, I will have at least one 30ft + section. Any guidance is appreciated.

I had a floor forensics expert come in and perform an analysis on the floor and his conclusion was that the floor wasn't properly acclimated, i.e. the floor was delivered on a Tuesday and installed the next day. He also commented on a hump that was caused by the installer injecting an adhesive between the boards in order to prevent extreme movement in the floor:

"hey were just going to inject glue in a few spots and put wood filler in all of the holes and gaps (that would fix maybe 15% of what was wrong)"

Be careful about this. My installer injected glue in one spot of my floor and a "hump" developed. Here's a youtube video of the results of the glue injection.

My husband and I are in the process of installing a click floating engineered wood floor in our master bedroom. This is our first time trying to install flooring and we are having trouble with the underlayment. We have it all rolled out and the seams are taped but it refuses to lay flat. We prepped the subfloor correctly. The wood is 1/2" thick and I'm not sure it will be heavy enough to push down the waves in the underlayment. The guy at lumber liquidators told us not to staple it down, but since it was so wavy we stapled it around the perimeter anyway. Still wavy in the middle. Should we remove the staples and trust that the floor will flatten out the underlayment? Should we try to flatten it by stapling it more?
