I am currently preparing for 1,500 sq-ft installation of 3/4", custom milled, T&G, back relieved, 3-10" wide Hickory. Flooring is 10%MC, 5/8" Spruce plywood subfloor is 11-13%MC. Experience with Hickory in eastern Canada is hard to find and I don't want to assume it is like other species. My concern is what precautions to take to prevent cupping. We have had heat and dehumidifiers on for past 2 months in this 1888 restoration and have brought subfloor MC down from 15-17% to 11-13%.
Is this low enough? also,
What type and length of fastener ?
What is best underlay ?
Face nailing ? wider boards, location ?
Any advantage to prefinishing bottom of flooring prior to laying?
Floor will be sanded and stained after install - recommendations for best type of finish for hickory?
Also, comments on any other precautions that I haven't thought of would be greatly appreciated.
