we just purchased a house that has a few rooms of the main level in 27 year wide planked old hearts of pine flooring. the owners did the rest of the main floor in a variety of other materials including ceramic tile and carpeting. i prefer all wood, so would like to get new wood to install in the areas where there is tile and carpet.
the old owners didn't do anything to the existing wood except what sounds like seal it when they first put it in. nothing else so it has a beautiful patina but also does appear a bit 'dry'. if you drop something on it like water, it soaks it in. i can most likely match the wide plank width but i'd be getting new pine flooring unfinished, so it would be a very light color.
i would love to match the existing patina with a stain, how difficult could that be? is this something i might be able to attempt on my own or should i call an expert?
and if that is not an option, i'm struggling with ways to incorporate the new wood into the other areas, which surround and butt up against the existing wood, but without looking like it was added later or just flat out looking weird. ideas for doing this are things like white washing or gray washing the wood, or laying it diagonally or in a pattern, adding a border, etc. any of these recommended by pros? any other ideas?
thank you in advance! image file of existing wood attached.
