Topic "Swirl marks" a message from FloorPro

Hi. I would like to get some input from some real floor pros. After finishing a floor with a dark walnut stain I noticed some areas in the floor with very light swirled scratches. When in a standing position I couldn't see anything at all, and I never had anyone complain about them. I'm just wondering if this is normal and inevitable, or there is something that needs to be done to avoid it.
I did 80 grit on the buffer then 100 and finished with 120

I saw some guys using the trio. The dust containment is amazing. No need for external vac. I am considering getting one myself, however I heard that there is a concern with the trio regarding uneven floors. Did anyone ever encounter any problem with that?

@Jeff - Just to clarify, Bona didn't buy K&T but did enter into a partnership with them. In essence, K&T will continue to manufacture both their machines (but Bona branded) and Bona machines. We will handle the sales, marketing and service for them worldwide. Any suggestions you would have for improvements to their machines would be appreciated. Several of our Bona sales team were also K&T users and have given us some great feedback. Any other questions or feedback, please feel free to give me a call at (800) 872-5515 or shoot me an email at todd.schutte@bona.com
Thanks!

Topic "Lightfast stain without acrylic/sealant as base" a message from jofinneg

Hi All,

I'm in search of a water based stain that does not have any type of sealant as a base component.

The reason for this need is that I am working with a Ciranova reactive stain, and I need it to interact with the wood even after I've laid down a thin base layer of stain.

Also, it is important that the stain is lightfast because I will finish with 2-3 layers of Hardwaxoil (Ciranova) and I don't believe there are any UV inhibitors in that product.

I have run some experiments with TransTint dye browns that I'm pleased with (using Dark Mission Brown and Golden Brown), but I don't know that I can be confident in the lightfastness of 'aniline' style dyes that don't have at least a partial pigment base. I'm just not sure.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
John

Hello,

I am a homeowner interested in hardwax oils for our old house restoration. I have been experimenting with wood bleach + mixing stains trying to get a white=grey aged look and I absolutely do not want any shine. I just discovered this thread and I think these products will be perfect for what we are looking for. I"m excited to give it a try.

My question is this: We have very old 1.5 inch wide red oak floors that need to be patched, mostly around previous vents that are larger than our new hvac openings. I am having a hard time finding suitable old wood to patch so I am resorting to patching with the same size of new red oak. Will the finishes be able to blend with HWO? Or should I resort to pulling up the old floor in one of the rooms to patch and replacing that room? Perhaps it will take some experimentation with different finishes to blend old and new.

Thank you!
Lauren

May, you could tell him to obtain the manufactures installation instructions. I don't know any that do not outline the humidity level requirements. If they do not follow them then they must accept the consequences.

I have had any number of builders, contractors etc. want wood installed before wet work is done and there is one simple request that always works. Ask for a conference with the end user with the builder-contractor explaining that the purpose is to explain to the end user what can happen when mfg instructions are not followed. It seldom happens and if I do lose one or two I figure it is better than taking chances. If the meeting does occur I have never had one, have the homeowner sign that they will assume responsibilities of not following mfg instructions.

Help, I have newly installed red oak. The area is about 1000 sq feet. My floor guy bleached it twice and neutralized. ( we plan on staining it a beautiful light gray ) . After the second round of bleach & neutralized, 9 of the wood boards shattered, they cracked & are all splintered. The wood was not bleached twice in the same day. I think the second bleaching was the next day. They have to be replaced. Its not good.we are now behind on schedule. and its going to be difficult to remove some of the damaged wood. He has done many many white floors, knows how to bleach & been doing floors for over 20 years. I feel confident that he did the bleaching process correct. Does anyone know why this happened? how could it have been avoided? also the wood boards that it happened to all have the same grain pattern.

What is the best way to refinish a pre finished floors? It's a maple floor with aluminum oxide factory finish. I have heard things like using old paper on the big machine to remove the factory finish top coat for your first pass then treat like an unfinished floors (40/60/100). I also read about paper made specifically for factory finish floors. Since it's maple I'm planning on finishing with a 120 on the big machine. Any advice will be gladly appreciate. Thanks.

This sounds like moisture to me. I have had Traffic in my personal home turn a milky color due to high humidity airflow (near a door that was not airtight). Based upon your measurements of the spots, I would want to know if you have duct work or something else directly under the spots. And what moisture readings of the floor were. The milky spot on my floor went back to normal after the humidity was corrected. If no moisture sources are present underneath, I would tend to agree about solvent being trapped.

Back in the 60's/70's/80's, 5 and 6 finger parquet flooring was popular. Harris (the original one) offered pre-finished and unfinished parquet. Hartco had a product that was generally considered residential. I'm looking for a source to match the old Harris style/spec. Any thoughts or leads out there?

Have been in touch with an overseas manufacturer who can do this on regular basis.

Also interested in making floors from Southern Yellow pine in 3/4" x 5" x 1' to 2', again Unfinished. This I m planning to do in Canada as I live in Canada.

Please offer your comments.

I stained white oak flooring with Dura Seal stain, color was 50% Jacobean 40% Coffee brown and 10% Ebony, the lady liked it, today we did 2 coats of bona mega semi gloss water base in 1 room & hallway and she don`t like it, she wants me to do the others rooms (which are stained but not coated) look more richer like espresso color, how do I get that color? (anyway of showing her samples?)
